So what is stress?

Stress is very abstract, it isn't something we can touch and we can only feel the symptoms when our bodies respond to certain situations. You see, our reptilian brain takes charge in fight or flight situations, or basically when we feel the 'threat'. We instinctively react. Our blood pressure rises, heart rate rises, digestive system slows down, immune system goes down, we're tensed and it is more difficult to sleep. In those situations the body releases hormones and chemicals such as adrenaline, cortisol and norepinephrine to prepare the body for physical action to ensure our own survival. However, being constantly in that state is not healthy. Chronic stress can be harmful while the good stress is useful.

Good stress VS bad stress

Yes, there is such a thing as good stress. Stress isn't always bad. Apart from being part of the mechanism to ensure our survival. Good stress can be useful because when your body has physical response, you have a boost of energy, you're more alert you take new challenges and it can help you to achieve more, and that's not a bad thing at all. However, each time we face a stressful situation, the physical response can last a long time. If we end up in that state often, it can take tolls on our body.

 

 

How does stress affect us?

Since we are all different, we may react differently to the stressor but common symptoms can be pains and aches in the chest, back, muscles, restlessness, stomach upset, heart disease, anger, anxiety, depression, forgetfulness, problem concentrating, sadness, burnout, from those symptoms some may even have food cravings and become obese or start using more alcohol or substances, the list can go on and it doesn't look very pretty.

How do we fight it?

Usually it is recommended to lead healthy lifestyle such as eat more vegetables, drink more water, get good sleep, but when you're stressed, your stomach is upset and you have difficulties sleeping, this option might not be easy. Exercise and meditation are the two things that you can probably manage more easily than trying to sleep when the adrenaline and cortisol are up the roof. You can also try our service.
